The Home Birth Slideshow of Sunday Quinn

A Week of Sundays What better way to wrap up A Week of Sundays than with the grand finale of her birth slideshow! :)

If you haven't already, feel free to read my birth story before you watch the slideshow.

Sunday Quinn's Birth Story, pt. 1 Sunday Quinn's Birth Story, pt. 2

A year after Sunday was born, I have finally put the finishing touches on her slideshow. This is the first slideshow I've created using iMovie and it was easy and complicated at the same time! I am sure there were easier ways to do a lot of the things I did but I had to go about just doing it the only way I knew how! I am happy with how it turned out... even if some of the tight crops feel a little too intimate. :) I think it's a great illustration of the last 5 hours of our labor and delivery experience with Sunday.

Even though I was pretty detailed with my birth story and I shared some pretty rough pictures of myself along with it... it is still a little nerve wracking sharing this whole slideshow with you all. But... I'm taking a deep breath and hitting "publish." I hope it encourages just ONE person to stop and research their options for labor and delivery... because it really can be a wonderful and empowering experience for women!

A Week of Sundays: Day 7 | Sunday's Birthday Party

A Week of Sundays

Trying to plan baby's first birthday party  is... confusing. I knew Sunday wasn't going to remember much, but I also didn't want to skip this milestone. It was something to be celebrated, for sure! After a lot of hemming and hawing, I finally decided to approach the celebration as a Thank You for all of those people who have helped us out this year: babysitters, nannies, family and friends who played significant roles in our lives as we adjusted to our new identity as a family of three.

I decided to have Sunday's party at The Farm Basket. I adore their little space upstairs and they make delicious food! I knew planning a party in the middle of my busiest season was going to be a challenge, so catering was definitely something I was hoping to take advantage of! I ordered up some delicious quiches, a cheese & cracker tray, and a fruit platter for a mid-morning brunch. I scheduled the party right between Sunday's nap times and it ended up working out perfectly.

My friend Joy helped me with the decorations and we started by picking out a handful of patterns. From the pretty fabrics, Joy created a banner for the party as well as some pom poms to hang above the food table. I took the fabric swatches to my friend Penny who made the awesome cupcakes and smash cake for us! She hand painted the designs from the fabric swatches onto the cupcake squares! All 36 of them! So incredible! (And don't even get me started on how DELICIOUS the cupcakes were!! She asked me my favorite cake/icing combination and I told her yellow cake / chocolate frosting. However, I didn't want dark colors on the cupcakes so I told her not to worry about satisfying my taste. :) BUT she ended up putting a chocolate filling inside the cupcakes... creating a way to satisfy both our taste buds AND my need for color matching. So, so awesome!)

I used some of the fabric from Joy to wrap around the glass candle holders (aka flower vases) I also had at Emily's baby shower. I filled the candle holders with flowers bought from Sam's Club the morning of the party - but the flowers were pretty pitiful. It was difficult finding bright and colorful flowers this time of year - all the harvest colors are out right now!

Anyway - center pieces were flowers and instagram pictures of Sunday. I hung a timeline of photos on a big mirror and set up a few big never-seen-before pictures of Sunday on the welcome table as well. (Hah - it was surprisingly difficult not to share those pictures with you all before the party! I'll be sharing them tomorrow... they are some of my absolute favorites of Sunday, ever!)

The party was relaxing and enjoyable. Everyone came, had brunch and visited for a while before we did the cake smash! And of course the Snapshot Studio was set up as a party activity as well. Overall, it was a lovely morning and I am really glad my preparations were low-key. Having the party catered was a HUGE weight off my shoulders and I will definitely do that again. Although in the future it'll probably be a pizza party for 10 kids, not a brunch for 40 people. :)

Okay, okay! Onto the photos!

The second-to-last picture is of my sister and her daughter, Shelby who both share a birthday with Sunday! All three born on November 20th...! They are some of my favorite people in the whole world so I think that's pretty awesome. :)

Happy Birthday Sunday!!! You are oh-so-loved by sooo many people!

A Week of Sundays: Day 5 | A year in pictures

A Week of Sundays

Today is Sunday's birthday party! I printed all of the following pictures to display at the party today so of course I'm going to share them with you guys! Gosh, I just think she looks so big in her 12 month pictures. She's a real toddler now... it's just crazy. It feels like there is no more baby left in her! Okay, well, when she is not getting her way she can sure act like a baby! :) Tommy and I had a lot of fun picking out the pictures we think best portrayed her personality at the times they were taken. And okay, we got a little bit sad, too... thinking about how these days are behind us. But, we are having so much fun with her right now so we're not going to dwell on the past! :)

Nice to meet you, mommy & daddy!

I sleep all the time right now.

I finally smile back at mommy! I light up her whole world with my smile.

I am learning to roll from back to belly and it is frustrating sometimes, but I'll get the hang of it soon!

I am so happy after nap time!!

My bouncy seat is my favorite place in the house right now!

Look at me, learning what it's like to have opinions! I'm confusing mommy a little these days, but she'll get the hang of it soon!

I LOVE spending so much time in the pool with mommy and daddy!

Look at me standing in the crib! (Mommy set me up like that) But, I've finally learned to sit on my own and I am a lot more interested in my toys now!

Yeahh! I totally flirt with the camera now! And everyone else who comes in contact with me! (I also scoot everywhere!)

I'm pulling myself to standing now, and still such a little flirt!

I definitely know what I want now and that's mama. All the time. And my tongue sticks out of my mouth almost constantly, too. Good thing it's cute!

Yay! I am SUCH a big girl now! I sign "more" ALL the time, especially when mommy asks me if I want some milk! :)

Okay - we're off to the big girl party! I'll be sharing all the pictures in a few days, don't worry!

A Week of Sundays: Day 4 | Things My Daughter Has Taught Me

A Week of Sundays

We need grace to make it.

A little TLC goes a long way.

A mess of toys can be cleaned up in under 5 minutes (with focus).

This too shall pass. This was my mantra on the tough days. The days when Sunday was only content in my arms all. day. long. This was my mantra in the middle of the night as I crawled out of bed for the 3rd, 4th, or 5th time. This was my mantra as she pinched and pulled at me while breastfeeding. This too shall pass. And I will surely miss it.

To slow down and listen.

Strawberries and bananas should be dessert, not a whole meal.

To savor the small things. Like really stop, breathe them in, and thank God for them kind of savoring.

Girls don't have to wear pink.

To embrace being a mother. Pregnancy, labor, delivery, and breastfeeding… All of these were great challenges that chipped away at my shell of selfishness and neediness (another great word is brattiness). They each molded me into the mother I am today. But it wasn't until Sunday was about 6 months old when I realized as I pushed her in the cart through the aisles of Target… this is motherhood. This is what I have always wanted. To spend time with my baby shopping, to nuzzle her cheeks and make her smile, to sneak her a cookie so she feels special. It was that moment when I surrendered to my new role in life. I decided to stop trying to be the person I was before she came. The coffee dates, the traveling, the social media… trying to pretend I didn't have a baby in my life and that everything was different was not working anymore. That was the day I dove in and embraced motherhood. The day I discovered the real joy of being a mother.

To not take this life for granted.

Schedules and routines are not overrated.

It only takes about 15 minutes to clean a whole kitchen.

Smiling is contagious. During Sunday's sad moments, I remember a piece of advice I read/heard/embraced: "Smile at her. Often." I stop and do this the most when we are at her changing table. Depending on her mood she is laughing and playing or screaming her head off and I never know what to expect until I lay her down on the table. When she is screaming I remember this advice and I smile. I turn up the volume on my voice and I speak to her in a soothing tone. "I love you sweet girl. You are my bestest little friend…!" And I smile. I smile big. And it works. She calms down and she may even smile back. It's a beautiful thing.

That eating healthy can be as easy as planning ahead and making the decision to do it. (And sweet potatoes are a God-given gift!)

Working too much makes the people around me feel neglected.

A little fresh air does a body and soul very good.

Saying family is a top priority and making family a top priority are two different things.

To stay true to my word. Something I admire about my own mother is that she never changed her mind. What she said is what was. "No" would not become "Yes" with any sort of convincing. While I remember this and don't seem to have a hard time implementing it into our parenting practices, I do have a hard time implementing it into other areas of my life. Sunday is a gentle reminder that I need to set boundaries and keep them, no matter who they affect. And if I say I am going to do something, I need to do it. More importantly, unless I have a plan to do it, I need not say I will. (sigh) Still learning this.

I must take care of myself first, or I am no good to my daughter.

I married a good man.

And finally: We are so very blessed.
